Characteristics of deformation:

While the survey was not focused on this volcano, Dieng was covered by the 2007-2008 PALSAR interferometric study of the island of Java performed by Philibosian & Simons. The survey did note a somewhat unusual positive inflation signal amounting to roughly 4cm during the relevant time period; however, most of this displacement occurred in a ‘spike’ between May 2008 and September 2009. Prior to this, very little deformation was observed at the volcano. Due to the ambiguity of the signal, the authors could not confidently attribute the uplift to a particular cause – it is worth noting, however, that a series of phreatic explosions did occur at the volcanic complex in January 2009, so it is possible that a hydrothermal source was responsible for the displacement.
